Everest Community College was opened
Popley was originally built in the 1960s and has recently benefited from much new residential development. This mainly residential area, is well served by public transport and is just to the north of the town centre. There are several primary schools and neighbourhood centres, as well as the Popley Fields Community Centre.
In 2007 the new Everest Community College was opened – a state-of-the-art secondary school now attracting students from a wide area.
The name Popley is an interesting derivation of the word “pop” an old English word meaning pebble, being a shortened word of “popel”. Ley means pastureland. Different roads in the area are named in themes – poets, islands and abbeys.
There is an annual Popley Festival held usually in May – check the What’s On Guide for more information, and there are a many communtiy facilities including the Popley Fields Centre.
Popley is set to grow with proposals for further new development – over the next five to ten years the development of the housing sites will provide a sustainable urban extension to Basingstoke of approximately 2100 dwellings, including the provision of a mix of both market and affordable housing, a new community school, new community facilities, neighbourhood centre, land for employment and sports, leisure and amenity open space.
